The hope is that the investment will raise Englandâs level of cycling to put the country on a level footing with countries such as Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands, where cycling rates are much higher. Currently, only 2 per cent of trips in the UK are made by bike, compared with 14 per cent in Germany and almost a third in the Netherlands.
